The history of the Ford Pinto-one of the worst cars ever made

The Ford Pinto subcompact car was first built Ford. He was traded in 1970 with competitors being the AMC Gremlin, Chevrolet Vega, and imports from Volkswagen, Datsun, and Toyota. It was a very popular car with 100 thousand units delivered by January 1971. A version produced under the name Lincoln Mercury was called Lynx.

The Pinto used proven thrusters in Europe, but the Vega had an innovative aluminum engine that caused problems. Robert Eidschun's Design of the exterior of the Pinto was chosen which was unusual because most cars are composed of elements of style for many designers. The Ford Pinto offered an inline 4 engine and bucket seats. And entry-level Pinto was $ 1 850 which made Ford cheapest since 1958.

Seat in Pinto was reduced to the word in relation to imports. Body styles were two door coupe, a hatchback called the Runabout and a two door station wagon. A top of the line Pinto Squire had faux wood sides. Magazine Road & Track did not sleep and standard drum brakes but loved motor 1. 6 L Kent. The Pinto was available with a choice of two engines and Ford changed power ratings almost every year. The Ford Pinto Pangra is a Pinto sports by produced by the Ford Huntington in California and 55 were only sold in 1973.

The Ford Pinto is best known for his design problem that allowed the fuel tank be easily damaged in a collision. Deadly fires and explosions were common occurrences in rear end collisions. The Pinto had no real structure or bumper reinforcement between the rear panel and the tank of gasoline. In some collisions with the gas tank would be pushed forward in differential had protruding bolts that could puncture the tank. Also the doors could jam during an accident due to poor building. This led to the nickname of Dick as a barbecue of four places.

The Ford Pinto cost/benefit analysis that Mother Jones magazine obtained that claimed Ford used to compare the cost of a repair $ 11 for the monetary value of a human life. This characterization of Ford's decision as a contempt for human life has led to lawsuits while Ford was acquitted of criminal charges. The NHTSA ruled in 1974 that Pinto had no problem recallable but in 1978, Ford initiated a recall providing a dealer installable safety kit which put the plastic protector over sharp objects, thus eliminating the risk of a gas tank puncture.

The Ford Pinto has the dubious honor of being on Time magazine's list of 50 worst cars of all time.
